Astrid Williamson - Pour

Sometimes you have to think beyond the music you normally listen to and try something completely different. The truth is that you often find this newfound music can be dubbed “weird and wonderful.” This is exactly the phrase I would use to describe Pour, with its somewhat haunting sound that still manages to be incredibly catchy.

The track begins with a short, gentle piano riff: a perfect example of when less is most definitely more, taking into consideration the feel of the song and remaining suitably simple. Soon added to this are some great synth beats that keep the track moving along and keep the listener’s interest going. Their slightly muted sound ensures they only add to the song’s eerie atmosphere, thankfully not steering it down the all too easy path of becoming a dance track. Astrid’s vocals are also well worth noting: smooth, captivating melodies sung with a rather unconventional voice that is very much in keeping with the song’s overall mood.

With all of this in mind, Astrid is certainly one to watch. Pour is a track that showcases her song-writing talent, with heartfelt lyrics and different layers combining to create one haunting but rather gentle sound that stays with the listener. It will come as no surprise to me if her upcoming album has many more unusual, enjoyable tracks like this one.

Pour is out on the 8th of August via One Little Indian.
