Sparky Deathcap - Tear Jerky

Tear Jerky is the latest EP from musician and artist Sparky Deathcap, written and recorded whilst on tour, along with the creation of his similarly-monikered webcomic, Tear Jerky.

Written mainly following a breakup with a girlfriend, the EP is a fairly melancholy affair with the obvious theme running throughout the lyrics supported by some simple yet beautiful music very much built in a lofi sound. Most of the songs are built up from simple guitar parts that draw you in to the sound, with just a smattering of drums and other percussion making an appearance to provide emphasis. The vocals are simply delivered with songs like Winter City Ghosts and Berlin Syndrome being almost spoken in delivery, in other songs sounding much more layered and musical.

Whilst sounding nothing alike, I would compare this music in idea to someone like Neutral Milk Hotel, in that Sparky Deathcap deconstructed is slightly underwhelming: simple guitar parts and basic vocals that never really show off, but combine together as a whole to take on a new life. This is music that really draws you in, with almost hypnotising guitars swirling around and fitting together perfectly with the vocals and percussion/

The Tear Jerky EP is out now from Sparky himself.
