Jamie Cullum - Don't Stop the Music

Jamie Cullum has a long history of reinventing classic songs. His album, Twentysomething, had an excellent interpretation of Gene Kelly’s seminal Singing in the Rain, and his live shows always feature new arrangements of others’ songs. It therefore comes as no surprise that Jamie Cullum’s new single is a storming jazz-soul version of Rihanna’s Don’t Stop the Music, laden with piano and oozing passion.

Beginning with a brushed drumbeat and featuring Cullum’s signature piano style, the song starts off quietly before erupting into a soul-pop masterpiece; jazz meets urban as Cullum skilfully solos his way up and down the piano’s keys during the transition to the song’s quieter middle moments. Before long, though, the song picks itself up and builds, seemingly towards a climactic ending, however a clever twist as the song finishes leaves you, the listener, wanting more.

Whether you’re a Rihanna or a Jamie Cullum fan, this jazzed-up version of dancefloor favourite Don’t Stop the Music is sure to put a smile on your face.

Don’t Stop the Music is out as a download-only single on the 25th of January, the video for which can be seen below.
