Stanley - Monkeys & Friends

An ethereal vibraphone melody serves as your introduction to Monkeys & Friends, the spectacular debut single from Aberdeen band Stanley. Frontman Stephen Podlesny’s striking vocals soar over a swirling backdrop of tight drums, arpeggiated guitar and a chunky bassline. A sense of laidback urgency drives the track forward, and at just over three minutes this is a perfect nugget of surreal pop-rock.

Taken from their forthcoming album, Animals with Amazing Disguises, regular Aberdeen music followers may wonder why it has taken so long for Stanley to release their debut. In fact, the band are totally aware of this, as Podlesny explains: “We recorded the album ourselves, and we are perfectionists. We spent the last couple of years experimenting with different recording techniques, learning and re-recording over and over until we got it right.”

But those two years of experimentation have certainly paid off, and this is a single that the band should be justifiably proud of. The skill and accomplishment of the musicians involved is matched only by the extremely high production values, and it is hard to believe that the track was, in fact, recorded in a rehearsal room near the harbour.

Fingers crossed we don’t have another 24 months wait for the album…

Monkeys & Friends is released on the 15th of November via Kittiwake Records.
