Probably the coolest thing to ever emerge from a needlework class, Deap Vally are a blues-punk duo from L.A. consisting of singer/guitarist Lindsey Troy and drummer/singer Julie Edwards. After hooking up over crochet needles little over a year ago, the pair have been making quite a name for themselves through their high-octane live shows and support slots with Muse and The Vaccines. They’ve also attracted the attention of The Mars Volta contributor/engineer Lars Stelfors, who has produced all the band’s output to date, and Josh Homme who invited the girls to open for Eagles of Death Metal in L.A. Given that their debut album is set to land later this year, and that they're about to begin their UK tour which will see them play alongside And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead at the NME Awards Show on 22nd February, I reckon Deap Vally are set to take over 2013.
Lies is a delicious slice of raucous blues-punk in the vein of The Dead
Weather, with a touch of Black Sabbath. Lindsey dishes out scuzzy riffs that
would make Jimmy Page proud and spits out words with venomous bile. Meanwhile,
Julie lays out the type of pulse-pounding beats that get you hooked
immediately. Fuse these elements together with a catchy chorus and menacing
vocal melodies that ooze confidence, and you have a monster of a single which is
sure to garner Deap Vally a lot of attention in the coming months.
I could wax on for ages about what makes these up-and-comers great,
but really the accompanying video for Lies
pretty much sums up what Deap Vally are all about: Lo-Fi rocking out, where
Julie and Lindsey play off each other’s energies to deliver a gutsy track with a lot of attitude.
Lies will be released on 25th February through
Communion/Island Records and Deap Vally will embark on a UK tour on 22nd
February.
