8track: The Jar Family

Picture the scene: you've just stepped out of the Hercules Moments DeLorean and you find yourself in the 90s. MC Hammer pants and Walkmen are all the rage. Deciding to ignore the fashion of the day, you pick up a Walkman and head home to 2012...

Over the past few months, we've been getting in touch with bands, celebrities and more to ask them to create eight-song-long mixtapes for YOU. So crack out your Walkman and enjoy...

North-East England industrial-folk 7-piece The Jar Family have a unique blues/folk/roots sound that has made well received on the radio and by the music press both locally and nationally. They have played many a festival and supported many a successful band, and their first single, Poolie Strut, became a big hit in their hometown of Hartlepool - it is now played before all the football team's home matches. Oh, and Keith Wilkinson (formerly of Squeeze, and the Jools Holland Big Band) is in the band, and their album was mixed by John Cornfield (Muse, Oasis, Supergrass). Impressive.

Bob Marley - No Woman No Cry
Because it’s a simple, honest and timeless tune.
[LISTEN]

Bob Dylan - Forever Young
I always like to give this boy a plug – he shows promise. But seriously… A great song from a great album (Planet Waves) featuring The Band. What more could anyone want?
[LISTEN]

Pink Floyd - High Hopes
It’s simply timeless and sends shivers through me, no matter how many times I hear it. The lapsteel on this track is awesome.
[LISTEN]

The Doors - Maggie M'Gill
For the general feel and the sound of the song coming from just a three piece band – Jim Morrison didn’t do anything. Outstanding!
[LISTEN]

Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe
This is how a record should sound – it captures the swagger and a moment in time perfectly. The mono mix is even better.
[LISTEN]

David Bowie - Drive-in Saturday
Still sounds fresh today and reminds me of sweet adolescent sexiness!
[LISTEN]

Woodie Guthrie - John Henry
Because it’s great!
[LISTEN]

Sam Cooke - Change Gonna Come
Heartfelt, soulful lyrics which fit the song perfectly – I love that style.
