Hailing from the deepest, darkest depths of Aberdeenshire, twisted tricksters Barry and Stuart are two of Britain's top magicians. Known for their work on shows like BBC's The Magicians and Channel 4's The Magic of Jesus, as well as their sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe, Barry and Stuart continue to amaze, and often disgust, their audiences with their amazing illusions.
Side A (the first four tracks) of this mixtape were chosen by Barry, while Side B (the second four) were chosen by Stuart. Enjoy!
Rollins Band - Liar
I'm starting with a classic. It gets more
obscure after this. I love how the track starts as a poem of which there are
numerous versions. Then it gets pretty heavy; it's good to listen to loud.
Buck65 - Craftsmanship
I love how Buck65 can rap about the art of
polishing shoes and make it interesting.
Busdriver - Imaginary Places
Busdriver's lyrics are usually really clever and he often uses very unorthodox rhyming schemes. This track is performed at
break-neck speed and he shows off just how good he is. I think it would be
pretty awesome to learn it.
Dimmu Borgir - Progenies of the Great Apocalypse
This song is like caffeine to me, honestly I
listen to it almost once a day. I put it on pretty loud in my headphones and 5
minutes and 25 seconds later I am pretty pumped. This was the track I listened
to a few minutes before going on stage for our tour and the BBC show.
Sigur Rós - Untitled #1
A perfect opening track to my side of the mixtape. It just sends you off into a journey inside your own heart within seconds of starting. There are no visuals on a 90s mixtape but this song has a
frighteningly beautiful video that you must see.
Laura Marling - Night After Night
There’s something entirely hypnotic about this
track: it’s immediately calming. Hearing it played live in the Albert Hall
earlier this year, I was just possessed by the sound and must have listened to
it a couple of hundred times since then. It’s truly astounding.
Radiohead - There There
There were some phenomenal anti-war albums released around the Iraq
invasion: Travis’ 12 Memories; Tom Waits' Real Gone. This track from Hail
to the Thief is packed with feeling; a desperate consolation.
Tom Waits - All The World Is Green
This is simply the bonniest song in the
world.
