Evanescence - Lost in Paradise

Since breaking out in 2003 with Bring Me To Life, Evanescence’s brand of operatic rock has never captured the public’s imagination in quite the same way. Despite this, they have still written some fantastic tunes, including 2006’s Call Me When You’re Sober, but what of their latest fare?

Taken from their self-titled third album, which was released last year, Lost In Paradise sounds exactly like what you would expect the new Evanescence single to sound like. It begins with singer Amy Lee’s soaring vocals accompanied by sparse piano chords, before building to a rousing rocky climax.

While it’s undoubtedly a pleasing listen for fans of the band, it can’t quite shake the feeling of being a little bit Evanescence-by-numbers: all the marks are hit at exactly the right moment, and that’s actually where the problem lies. This is the sound of a band firmly in their comfort zone, not pushing the boundaries of their abilities and imaginations. It by no means feels “churned out” – quite the contrary, it sounds like a lot of love and attention went into writing and producing the song – however it doesn’t quite have the excitement factor of hearing the epic Bring Me To Life for the first time.
