The Pigeon Detectives - Lost

The upcoming single, Lost, from the Pigeon Detectives put me in a good mood. Not because it is overly upbeat and happy, but because it has that great, rich sound that many have come to love in the band’s music. If I were Simon Cowell, I might say this has the “Listenability Factor,” and while that doesn’t sound like much, it’s a quality that entails much more than it may seem to imply. To gain this title, in my opinion, a song needs to fit certain criteria. This single is memorable, managing to stay in my head for a good while, and I believe it’s all down to the excellent choice of chords which create a fantastic tune that evokes strong emotions in the listener. Because of this, the verses are as good and as catchy as the chorus – a rare treat!

Thankfully lacking the disjointed sound that too many songs have, this one simply flows seamlessly, keeping all ears with it. As for the vocals, lead singer Matt Bowman is excellent. His voice is exactly the kind that this music needs – deep and resonant yet not so perfect that any emotion seems false. Quite the opposite, in fact: feelings are conveyed powerfully throughout the track, with a gradual build up to an intense ending.

All the threads of this song have been wonderfully woven together to produce something likeable, enjoyable, danceable, singable, and all things in between.

Lost is currently on the album Up, Guards and At ‘Em! and will be released as a single on the 15th August 2011.
