Jonah Matranga Live - The Tunnels 31/05/11 and 01/06/11

Performing multiple nights at the same venue is something typically reserved for only the biggest acts – Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones and other similarly huge artists. It's certainly not something you expect to be seeing in Aberdeen, and even more surprisingly in a smaller venue like the Tunnels. Thankfully Jonah Matranga decided to buck this trend with a special one-off, two-day residency in the Tunnels.

Before Jonah, though, we had Falling Into Indifference – a normally fully electric band opting to join the other artists playing acoustically on this tour. They threw their all into the set, even if not seeming entirely comfortable with their music played in this different fashion.

After them we were treated to Jonah's current touring partner, Mikee J Reds, who left his normal band Call Off the Search at home and instead played his own material solo and acoustically. Taking to the stage, he grabbed the attention of everyone in the Tunnels with his brand of heartfelt and emotional music, and provided the perfect opener and lead in to Jonah.

Jonah Matranga was obviously the artist everyone had come to see, though, easily taking on the challenge of playing two nights of music to a crowd full of similar faces on the second night. With such an extensive back catalogue, he chose to play two completely different shows instead of featuring any repetitions. Working through his repertoire from bands Far and Gratitude, alongside previous solo work as One Line Drawing and New End Original, Jonah also took requests from fans in the crowd and fitted in a few personal favourites along the way. There was even time for a few covers from artists ranging from Neil Diamond to Genuwire to Beyonce.

The only concession to the original ‘no repeats’ plan was a repeat of This Is Who I’m Gonna Be from the new album, before a stunning rendition of So Long during which Jonah ditched the microphone and stage to head out for a walk through the crowd. One final unaccompanied vocal track marked the end of two completely stunning performances.
