Les Savy Fav Live - The Tunnels 01/03/2011

Tonight Aberdeen was to bear witness to New York's ten-legged eccentric rock outfit Les Savy Fav. The four musicians were ready on stage waiting for their singer, who was currently nowhere to be seen. Turning around, there was a bearded man in a woman’s top, a wig and with stickers on his face making his way through the crowd. This was of course, for the unenlightened, Tim Harrington, Les Savy Fav’s eccentric singer, who would go on to molest, entertain and baffle tonight’s Aberdonian audience.

Launching into Lips N’ Stuff, Les Savy Fav instantly kicked members of the crowd into frenzy. Tim Harrington was having some troubles with his microphone for a start, so the vocals ended up being a bit off, however he managed to change out microphones and things became clearer.

Following on with most recent album opener Appetites, Les Savy Fav were on fire. The band themselves were really very tight; however Tim Harrington’s vocals were slightly dodgy at times. He is forgiven for this though, as his other entertainment more than made up for it. Tearing off his top and stroking his nipples is not something I thought I wanted to see, but I enjoyed it.

Tearing through more songs, mainly from 2010’s Root For Ruin, Tim spent about half his time in the crowd as opposed to the stage. He did just about everything to the crowd. This included dancing, stroking and lots and lots of touching. At one point he forced a poor member of the crowd’s head into his crotch, for most this would be disturbing, however I caught a glimpse of a smile from the man afterwards. Hey, I am not going to judge…

Putting on a mitre (a bishops hat), Tim declared “this is for a church-like song” leading into Dirty Knails. This again found him making his way around the crowd. Responses to Tim’s antics ranged from looking shit scared and running away to hugging him franticly. He even at one point had the whole of The Tunnels crowd sitting down on the floor around him.

Before playing Let’s Get Out Of Here Now, guitarist Seth told the crowd “we had no idea Aberdeen would be this awesome, if we had we would have come earlier”. With the crowd singing back the chorus of “Let’s get out of here now”, Tim literally got out of there leaving The Tunnels via the fire exit. I have heard rumours he ended up on the Green and rumours he ended up in Marks and Spencers.  All I know is he eventually appeared back in The Tunnels making his way through the crowd back to the stage. The band then left the stage leaving Tim and Seth speaking to the crowd.

Deciding whether they had time for one more song, thankfully they did, the rest of the members returned to the stage and launched into Who Rocks The Party, again resulting in a mass sing-along from the crowd. With Tim swinging around in the crowd with his microphone outstretched the song came to an end as the crowd sang the last few words.

Les Savy Fav then finished up and thanked tonight’s audience, but really it was us that should have been thanking them. Tim and co then left through the crowd, with Tim receiving yet more hugs… as if he had not already had enough.
