Frank Turner Live - Lemon Tree 16/02/11

The evening’s proceedings kicked off with an energetic performance from Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun. A perfect match for Frank Turner, Lockey & co. whipped the already-large crowd into a frenzy with their powerful folk-pop tunes. Set highlights included brilliant pop song Atlases, and new single Wishing Well which is available from the group’s Bandcamp profile.

Following a good few years away from Aberdeen - extended even more by a snow-delayed gig - Frank Turner stepped onto the stage to an uproarious welcome. After a barrage of woops and cheers, Turner burst into song and didn't let up for the best part of an hour and a half, filling each and every minute with folk-punk fun.

Ploughing through his extensive back catalogue, it was perhaps the material from 2008’s Love Ire and Song that garnered the best reaction, however every single song was rife with mass sing-alongs - even most of the new ones. Tracks like Reasons Not To Be An Idiot and Nashville Tennessee were greeted like old friends, whilst newer songs were welcomed into the fold with open arms.

One new track that particularly struck a chord with the crowd was Peggy, a song about Turner’s grandmother who once gave him whisky - at the tender age of 10 - just so she could beat him at a game of cards! Elsewhere, old favourites like I Knew Prufrock Before He Was Famous and Long Live the Queen were enjoyed by all, as was a cover of Loudon Wainwright III’s Motel Blues.

Throughout his set, Turner reminisced  about his past experiences in Aberdeen, recalling gigs in The Tunnels and CafĂ© Drummonds with a fondness usually reserved for remembering old school chums. After leaving the stage briefly, Turner returned to the stage for the obligatory encore, treating his fans to the song they had been baying for all gig long - Photosynthesis - and assuring the elated revellers that his absence from Aberdeen would this time be nowhere near as long. Let's hope he keeps that promise.
