Weather Barn - The Boat Ride

When Cast of the Capital reinvented their image, some said they were foolish: that casting off their previous hard-earned reputation would set them back, and limit their progress. Last year, however, they returned in style as Weather Barn, with a critically-acclaimed single and an army of new followers.

From fan-favourite Comiston Springs to 2010's storming Park Hands, Weather Barn are the masters of writing catchy indie-pop tunes and, over the years, the Aberdonian quartet have never missed the mark. It is encouraging, then,  to see that new single The Boat Ride follows on in a similar fashion, perfectly encapsulating that summer feeling as the crisp guitars and Matt Morris’ distinctive vocals playfully tussle to and fro as if created specifically for that purpose.

At just over two and a half minutes, The Boat Ride is the perfect antidote for Aberdeen’s elongated winter blues, and never overstays its welcome. Instead, it provides the listener with a tantalising glimpse of what's to come from the band in 2011, the year in which they hope to record their debut album. Disproving the armchair critics, Weather Barn have crafted a golden nugget of pop which has drawn attention from many major players in the Scottish music industry, including a certain Mr Jim Gellatly.

2011 looks set to be the year Weather Barn take over the world. And if The Boat Ride doesn’t get serious radio airplay, the UK’s radio DJs have a lot to answer for!

The Boat Ride is out on the 28th of March on Kittiwake Records.
