Pinkerton itself was initially not received fantastically well. The media gave it a lukewarm response and it never quite received the recognition it deserved at its time of release. It however over the years became the Weezer fan’s favourite and even resulted in some media outlets going back to re-review it. From the first synth note on ‘Tired Of Sex’ through to the last chord on ‘Butterfly’, Pinkerton is perfection, well as close as a pop rock album can get. It became Weezer’s benchmark of album quality for every album following it.
Here there is two CDs worth of songs from the Pinkerton era. The extra tracks are a mixture of b-sides, live versions and previously unreleased songs. If you never got enough of Pinkerton then here is what you were needing.
The radio remixes though all seem a bit pointless. The difference between them is not much, plus who really wants to listen to an edited Pinkerton song...?
Nevertheless the b-sides and unreleased tracks make up for it. Almost lost song ‘Tragic Girl’, apparently it was forgetting about initially, is incredible. Helping to finishing off the deluxe edition perfectly. The song is everything you love about Pinkerton put into a catchy and addictive five minute song. The b-sides too are genuinely fantastic and each one could have easily made the cut for being included on Pinkerton, and that is saying something.
If you do not already own Pinkerton then shame on you, go quickly redeem yourself and buy this album. Even if you already own Pinkerton, buy this for the b-sides and unreleased tracks alone. You will not regret it.
