Sparrow and the Workshop Live - Aberdeen 03/10/10

The problem with Snafu is that their gigs are woefully under-promoted. As a result, the Batcave-like club had only managed to draw a small crowd for tonight’s Sparrow and the Workshop gig. Those that were there though, were in for a real treat…

Opening the evening’s entertainment was local singer/songwriter Steven Winton, lead singer of Kashmir Red gone solo, who plays an interesting brand of acoustic folk.

Next up were touring support, the John Knox Sex Club, a 6-piece alt-folk outfit who produce a sound akin to the bastard lovechild of Frightened Rabbit and Dananananaykroyd. Throughout their impressive set, various members of the band could be found amongst the audience, clearly lost in the moment and determined to put on a strong performance for those few who had turned up to see them. So appreciative, in fact, did the band seem that at one point their frontman gave each and every audience member a giant bear hug.

Despite the intensity of the support, however, it was the main attraction – Sparrow and the Workshop – who elicited the best response from the diminutive crowd, and deservedly so. At once charming, frontwoman Jill O’Sullivan won the audience over with her lilting siren-song as she and her cohorts powered through an engaging set of old favourites and new tracks alike. As a kilted man grooved the night away on the dance floor, Sparrow and the Workshop meandered their way through songs like Devil Song, I Will Break You, The Gun and Last Chance, all taken from their recent debut album, Crystals Fall. The band even chose this – their Aberdeen gig – to give new single Black to Red its debut live outing, to an enthusiastic response.

Throughout their set, Sparrow and the Workshop enchanted and enthralled the gathered crowd, and despite the small turn out, the audience were massively appreciative. For now though, we must resign ourselves to the fact that the band’s first headline date in Aberdeen is over. Let’s hope it won’t be too long before they’re back…
