65daysofstatic - Heavy Sky EP

Arising from the We Were Exploding Anyway sessions, 65daysofstatic’s Heavy Sky EP is a new seven track EP featuring one remixed favourite from the album, and six all new songs written and recorded during the Exploding… sessions.

The EP starts off firstly with a remix of the track Tiger-girl, which takes the final ten minute epic from We Were Exploding Anyway and cuts it down to a much more succinct three and a half. Unlike many third party remixes that spin tracks off in new directions, this 65 edit takes the full song and really condenses it, keeping the same ebb and flow of synths and guitars, and the relentless pounding of the kick that kept the original moving, and bar a slightly shorter intro feels right at home. Despite knocking off almost two thirds of the length, it is not lacking in any way compared to the earlier version.

The six entirely new tracks then lead off from exactly where Tiger-girl ended Exploding… with a familiarity in sound and pace that makes the lineage obvious – a beautiful instrumental sound built from swirling guitars, layered pianos, synth, electronica and the continual ebb and flow in both volume and sheer noise that 65 are known for.

The tracks run the whole range of 65’s sound, from the layered and slowly building Pacify putting together beautifully orchestrated piano and atmospheric synthesis, all the way to Beats Like A Helix, just over two minutes of electronics backed up by furious and violent drumming before burning out. Tracks like Sawtooth Rising and The Wrong Shape stick to 65’s tried and tested formulas while still managing to sound unique and fresh, while my personal favourite PX3 to me sounds like an updated and improved equivalent to previous single Radio Protector, with a song growing around a beautiful piano riff, growing as guitars, synths and drumming are all added in.

For those of you who have heard We Were Exploding Anyway this will stand as a fantastic extension to the album, and for anyone who hasn’t heard it yet, a fantastic intro to 65daysofstatic and a collection of songs that while being ‘extras’ from the album, all stand defiantly proud on their own.
