The Twilight Sad - The Wrong Car

The Twilight Sad are, for the uninitiated, one of Scotland’s rising talents: a Kilsyth band with a penchant for the morose and the noisy (and not a derogatory term for those with an over-active fascination with Stephanie Meyer’s literary saga). The Wrong Car, the latest 4-track EP from the Twilight Sad, is released at a time when the band are winding down the tour for their second album, Forget the Night Ahead, and moving on to album number three.

First up is title track The Wrong Car, a song omitted from their second album on account of it “not being completed to the band’s satisfaction,” which is everything we have come to expect and love from the Twilight Sad: James Graham’s recognisable vocals cut sharply through the layered backdrop of noisy guitars and pulsating drums. At over 7 minutes long, the track never loses its momentum and is propelled forward by a sense of melancholy urgency. Throw Yourself into the Water Again follows, once more taken from the band’s unreleased back catalogue, is another would-be classic Twilight Sad track featuring guitarist Andy MacFarlane’s signature distorted sound.

The other two tracks on the EP are, in fact, remixes by other much-respected Scottish bands. The first, a Mogwai remix of The Room, is a subtle affair: the song is stripped back to its bare bones and given a haunting new sound: Graham’s vocals shine poignantly through on this touching version of the Twilight Sad’s latest single. The second remix comes courtesy of Glasgow-based Errors, with whom the Twilight Sad will be touring with later this year (they’ll be in Aberdeen on the 29th of September). Returning a favour (guitarist MacFarlane remixed Errors’ Bridge or Cloud earlier this year), Errors have, as may be expected, added an electronic flavour to the Twilight Sad’s Reflection of the Television, similarly changing the tone of the song dramatically.

Both the digital and 12” vinyl versions of the EP will be augmented by an exclusive digital download bundle, which includes other remixes and alternative versions of songs featured on Forget the Night Ahead.

While this EP may not be for the casual listener, fans of the Twilight Sad will appreciate this stopgap between the Twilight Sad’s sophomore and third outings. Featuring new and reworked songs, The Wrong Car is similar to previous EP, Killed My Parents and Hit the Road, in that it presents an alternate side to the Twilight Sad, revealing that they’re not just about the noise and distortion. Rather, this EP showcases the talent and creativity behind the band, whilst also revealing how other prominent Scottish musicians could interpret their music. And that insight is no bad thing.
