The Holloways Live - Aberdeen, 08/11/09

With the cold weather heralding the oncoming of winter, this Sunday held host to The Holloways playing Aberdeen’s Warehouse with an aim to brighten up a chilly day with some rather enthusiastic and upbeat music. First up though, were The Debuts... Coming onstage to a rather nonexistent crowd of faces hidden away at the back of the venue, they nevertheless did their thing playing their own Scottish accented answer to modern indie. While they may not have gotten the reception they expected this evening, they are definitely a band to keep an eye on for the future.

The throaty roar of guitars opening up was all that heralded the arrival of Three Seeds In Paris, upping the noise levels somewhat and bringing a whole lot more rock to the stage with a huge sound somewhat reminiscent of the louder and riffier end of Led Zeppelin fusing with Seasick Steve and turning the volume up. Sadly only a few of the faces hidden in the gloom managed to make it towards the stage but that didn’t seem to bother the band at all, who were making the most of the night regardless. Something should also be said for the one slow song in the set – a new song starting out fairly quiet and subdued, slowly building and building before suddenly exploding into a wall of noise; vocals harmonising and being traded back and forth throughout, and ramping up the volume back to previous levels for the remainder of the set.

The Holloways were the band everyone was here to see, and gave everyone exactly what they needed to get up onto their feet and down to the stage with their cheeky and upbeat take on the modern indie sound made so popular by bands like the Arctic Monkeys. A sound which I can gladly say takes on a whole new life live, with a much more upbeat and ska-tinged sound than on record. Taking to the stage to the rather ominous sound of John Williams’ Jaws Theme, they quickly raised the mood with the opener of So This Is Great Britain? and blasted through a set of songs both old and familiar, and new from their latest album No Smoke, No Mirrors.

After a short mid set deviation into a few of their slower numbers, including Knock Me Down, they quickly raised the atmosphere again with requests for everyone to get down the front and to dance more, to add some more fun to a cold Sunday evening. They then headed back to their debut album to close the set with the favourites of Generator and Re-Invent Myself.
