Mumford and Sons Live - Aberdeen 18/09/09

Having not been plastered all over the NME or avidly played on Radio 1, you would be forgiven for not having heard of Mumford and Sons. However stepping into Mumford and Sons’ sold out show at Cafe Drummonds, it became apparent that to some people they were a big deal, a very big deal. So did they really live up to the expectation of the handfuls of eager fans?

Wasting no time to prove they were, Mumford And Sons tore into their set, starting with their debut album’s title track ‘Sigh No More’. They had the crowd enthralled from the first note, and for the next forty minutes, that did not stop. As ‘Little Lion Man’ kicked in (to probably the best response of the night...) it became clear, by the smiles from the band, that they knew this was a very special gig. Confirming this frontman Marcus announced “this is the best reception we have ever had this far from home!”

Tearing through the rest of the set, Mumford and Sons put genuine enthusiasm and emotion into everyone one of their songs. Perhaps this is why every member in the crowd could not help but have a smile on their face. Before playing “Dustbowl Dance” banjo player Winston informed the crowd “this is our last song.” To which the crowd let out a sigh of disappointment, showing that they wanted more, lots more.

Before the band had even left the stage the cries for “one more song” had already began. Returning to the stage to fulfil this request (well it was probably planned before hand, but this was truly a deserved encore) Mumford and Sons kicked into new song ‘Whispers In The Dark’. The crowd was in for a treat with this song, it really showed that the band have even more promise with their new material. Leaving the stage again to the biggest clap of the evening, Mumford and Sons had definitely lived up to the expectations.

Mumford and Sons have a way of playing to a large crowd, yet still manage to make the gig feel very intimate. Going by this performance they will get inevitably bigger, and very deservedly so.
