8track: Avoid the Morning

Let us take you on a magical trip back to the 90s. MC Hammer pants were all the rage and Walkmen were the height of new technology. Keeping this in mind, over the past few months we've been getting in touch with bands around the country and asking them to create a metaphorical mixtape containing, you guessed it, eight tracks!

This week it's the turn of Avoid the Morning bassist, Jake Lawson. Avoid the Morning are an Aberdeen-based band who specialise in feel good pop-punk, and are taking the local music scene by storm! After some line-up changes and a well-earned break, they're about to hit the stage again, with brand new songs in amongst old favourites. With an EP under their belt, and another on the way in early 2010, Avoid the Morning are getting ready to invade your stereo. But for now, let's see what's playing on Jake's...

Title: Grand Theft Autumn
Artist: Fall Out Boy
Why it’s here: Back in the days when Pete didn’t show his cock to online jailbait, FOB were actually good, and any pop-punk band now can take a lesson from this song.

Title: Vermillion Pt. 2
Artist: Slipknot
Why it’s here: Just goes to show that no matter how heavy you are, you should always have a soft side. Even if that soft side is a twisted, sinister acoustic song. It’s still soft.

Title: Waking Up In Vegas
Artist: Katy Perry
Why it’s here: The gap between rock and pop is getting smaller and smaller, in a good way. This song is proof that pop songs that are a little rockier are amazing, and vice versa. Pop up your songs rockers!

Title: Zzzonked
Artist: Enter Shikari
Why it’s here: They had to be here, they are my favourite band. And this song shows how out there their sound is. This song is mental. And again they’re breaking barriers: dance and hardcore.

Title: 15 Fathoms, Counting
Artist: Bring Me The Horizon
Why it’s here: Lyrics aren’t always a good thing. This song just proves that if you got a nice tune going, keep it that way. Simpler is better…. Is simpler a word? More simple.

Title: Stand And Fight Together
Artist: Avoid The Morning
Why it’s here: OK, putting our own song on this is a little, y’know. But it’s because it’s just a feel good song, and it’s the song that got us noticed for the Fat Hippy Sampler Vol. 3, and I guess there’s just a little sense of pride.

Title: Home Versus Home
Artist: The Xcerts
Why it’s here: Just because they’re also from Aberdeen. And they are a really great band and really nice guys. And looking at these guys you realise that if you just put some hard work in, you can get bigger too. They just give hope for up-and-coming Aberdeen bands.

Title: The Way I am
Artist: Eminem
Why it’s here: Simply because it was the first ever piece of music I bought. I bought it on tape too! 86p from Woolworths (R.I.P.) My mum hated it. Then bought me the album for Christmas! Ha. It’s different from the rest of my mixtape but you know, you gotta mix it up a lil. Get it? Mixtape. Mix it up. Oh yeah…

Avoid the Morning play their first co-headline gig at in Aberdeen at the end of October. Their debut EP, Things Don't Always Have To Make Sense, is available on iTunes.
