When did you all realise that music was what you wanted to do in life?
I don't know if there was a defining moment for any of us. Billy (drums) and I (Cole, vocals/guitar) were making music in our early teens and were pseudo-serious about it from the off but we've never set anything in stone. I'd love to carry on making music for a very long time, but I’m interested in all sorts: can't be contained!
How did you all meet each other and was it clear right away that you could work together?
No, we definitely had to get through a torturous pain barrier and made the decision to be very ruthless when it came to dropping songs. Most importantly, I think we had to learn to adjust to each other's own glorious, dysfunctional personalities. We got together because all of us wanted to play and were on the lookout for likeminded people.
You have a very unique sound which we feel is much needed in today's music scene. When did you realise you were onto something?
Thank you! After a few months of thrashing around things came together, but I really don't think we've got going yet. There's a lot more we want to explore and get into. The sound is always changing, that's what keeps us interested and happy basically. We'd get bored otherwise.
How long did it take to record Coloured Clutter?
Five weeks over Christmas 2010.
How easy do you find the recording process?
We thrive in it! We got very creative in there and tried to use the time to stretch out the songs. It helped that we got on really well with Bob Earland (Clor, Roots Manuva, Wiley) who listened to our ideas and implemented his own. Hearing the record come to life was such a satisfying and rewarding process. We were also honoured to have Dave Coulter (Gorillaz, Patrick Wolf) and Terry Edwards (PJ Harvey) join us on a few tracks.
One of the things that impressed us most with the album is the sense that it works as a single, cohesive piece and could be considered as a whole. Was this important to you when recording the album or was it accidental?
I'm very glad you picked up on that; it might have been the first element of the record we discussed and immediately agreed upon before we began the sessions. We wanted it to be considered a whole body of work.
Generally speaking, what stimulates you? Where do you get ideas for songs?
Well I think we are inspired by anything that challenges what you normally expect. That's what most interests us and is why we started the group: to emulate those who had inspired us and hopefully do the same for others. It's all about progression and the sharing of ideas.
When push comes to shove, what would you say is your favourite album?
This is not a pleasant question. I'm going to say one of our guitar player Joe's favourites: Killing Is My Business And Business Is Good by Megadeth.
Coloured Clutter is an absorbing and diverse debut. Where do you think you will go with your next album?
Thank you very much. We want to keep progressing and continue to broaden our horizons. We want to keep challenging ourselves and our listeners; that's what fuels us.
Keep your ears to the ground for The Savage Nomads in the year to come. With impressive debut Coloured Clutter released last month, celebrity endorsements and a promise that their best is to come, I have a feeling we will be hearing a lot from this band in future.
Coloured Clutter is available on Alaska Sounds now and you can find out more about the band at www.myspace.com/thesavagenomads
