The Deportees - I Lost Her to the Sea

The Deportees have been on our radar for a while here at Hercules Moments. They’ve been peddling their wares round Aberdeen for a while now, but the time has finally come for their debut single, I Lost Her to the Sea, released on local label Bedford Records.

The two songs featured on the single are perhaps the perfect introduction to The Deportees. The title track – the mellower of the two – is an indie-flavoured romp through country music. While the a-side is good, though, this is one of those rare occasions where the b-side is in fact stronger. With its bluesy swagger, slick harmonica solo and rousing chorus, When the Roses Bloom Again is an upbeat indie-country anthem and really captures the spirit of the band.

Whilst the two tracks are obviously by the same band, they do differ in sound and it’s these contrasts that really make them work together. The Deportees here show that their indie-country balladry is dynamic and inventive, and this is a single they should be immensely proud of.

I Lost Her to the Sea is out now on Bedford Records.
