Zico Chain - These Birds Will Kill Us All

Here at Hercules Moments we’ve been big fans of Zico Chain for a while now. We’ve followed them from the times when their name was preceded with a “The”, through the self-titled EP and the stunning debut album Food. We’ve seen them live, and we’ve given them cake. This single has been one of the most eagerly awaited releases of the year here at Hercules Moments. And here’s what we made of it…

The first thought on hearing These Birds Will Kill Us All is that Zico Chain have grown up. Not in a bad way: the power and emotion we loved before still shine through, but the songs are structured better, the playing is insane and the lyrics are even more potent (albeit written about a bird that flew into a flat). Beginning relatively calmly, the song builds to a rollicking climax; melodic and tuneful yet raw and mighty in equal measures.

What follows is Bile N Blood, somewhat more ‘traditionally Zico’, a storming track with a killer riff and plenty of drive. Chris Glithero’s burly vocals give way to a short but exciting hard-rock infused solo amidst the intense noise. Daycase is then yet another departure for the band. It’s very short, and yet is possibly the catchiest song of the three. Sounding like it belongs on the soundtrack to a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game, it’s a minute and a half of pure pleasure: brilliantly melodic and just great fun.

So how does this latest single fair? If this is an indicator of what’s to come for the band, then the future of hard rock is in safe hands. Still packed full of killer riffs and genius musicianship, Zico Chain have taken their music to a whole new level. Where would you rather be?

These Birds Will Kill Us All is out on the 19th of October on Degenerate Music.
