Baddies - Do The Job

Angular guitar riffs have been made popular of late by bands like Franz Ferdinand, The Futureheads, Young Knives and We Are The Physics. Now, joining the ranks of the alt-rock elite are Baddies, a twin-sporting Essex-based band whose catchy hooks have been infiltrating festivals across the country this summer.

Do The Job, their debut offering, opens with the terrific Tiffany… I’m Sorry. Hard hitting and throwing you straight in at the deep end, this is a memorable introduction to the world of Baddies. As frontman Michael Webster chants “I wasn’t seven, I was six years old”, you instantly get a feeling for the captivating album which follows.

Next up is Open One Eye, a song which by all rights should dominate the charts. At just over 3 minutes, this catchy piece of alt-pop-punk perfection is an excellent choice as lead single for the album, and it lingers in the listener’s mind for hours after listening.

Elsewhere on the album, previous singles Battleships and Holler For My Holiday, show that the band have always had a flair for writing such memorable songs. Baddies have been described by others as a mix of Queens of the Stone Age, Klaxons and Franz Ferdinand: taking the best parts from each band and combining them to make something special and this is possibly most apparent on Battleships, an excellent track which features all the best bits of Baddies’ songwriting abilities.

Festival favourite We Beat Our Chests harbours a chant along chorus, perfect for stirring up good times in an audience. Again, the influence of Klaxons seems apparent here, however Baddies are careful never to imitate, and this is a song that could well be a hit single in the near future.

There are no standout tracks on this album. This is not as negative as it sounds, however, as this is simply a standout album. Without a doubt on of the best debuts this year, devoid of filler and packed full of great pop tunes; this album is not one to be missed. Baddies have arrived and conquered. And for once, we can be glad that the good guys haven’t won this time around.

The single, Open One Eye, is out on the 14th of September and the album, Do The Job, is out a week later on the 21st of September.
