I bloody love this EP. There, I said it. I’ve written and rewritten the introduction to this review more times than I can count on my fingers and toes, but I’m fed up of trying to be witty and verbose. It all boils down to that simple statement; that basic and mildly sweary expression of joy: I bloody love this EP.
Hurricane Poor Things is a delight from start to finish
and, in a week where the gloomy clouds of Aberdeen have departed and the sun
has come out to play, it’s the perfect summery soundtrack. Upbeat and
energetic, it builds upon 2011’s R U
Sitting Comfortably? and lifts the band’s sound to new heights, as
previously hinted at by the demos they have sporadically posted on Soundcloud
these past few months.
I can’t
help but grin from ear to ear when I listen to this record: from the jangly intro
to Beachcomber, with its optimistic refrain
of “teenage dreams will never die”, to the riffy outro of Ice Cream, it’s a barrage of upbeat tunes. Sandwiched in between
are three more – lead single Morgan, Happy Liar and Summer Clutch – which show that there really isn’t a bad moment on
the whole EP.
Taking their
cues from the likes of Pavement and Weezer, but never falling into the dreaded
realms of pastiche or parody, Glasgow three-piece Poor Things have crafted five
songs of pure summer bliss; a masterclass in great guitar pop. So grab a cold
beer, find a seat somewhere in the sun and press play. What are you waiting
for?
Hurricane Poor Things by Poor Things is out on the 10th
of June via Vinyl Richie Records.
