This new single from The Travelling Band is beyond
brilliant. It sounds traditional yet modern, and combines a wide variety of
instruments from horns to strings to form a somewhat unique sound. What is
absolutely certain when listening to this is that there is no song like it at
the moment; it’s something I don’t think I have ever heard, which is a rare
quality considering the vast degree of tracks these days with similar ideas
behind them. I find it supremely challenging to even place this one in a specific
genre and indeed the band themselves claim it falls between categories.
This
aside, the main attraction of Sundial
MMXI is its fantastic ability to cheer you up. I have always been one for a
song that improves my mood, and this fits the bill entirely with its uplifting
emotional sound that somehow completely bypasses the signpost for 'cheese-town' and heads in a more satisfying direction.
It would be wrong of me not to mention the bizarre - yet
genius - idea that The Travelling Band have had of a single war! Yes, they decided
they would hold a small competition between Sundial
MMXI and On the Rails (the tracks
appear on a double-A-side single), with the winner being the one most voted
for and downloaded – for free – on the website. The supporters of the winning single are even to receive a small prize!
At the time of writing this review, the winner
had not been revealed, and so I am free to speculate. The two songs have very
different sounds, perfect for a head-to-head. While Sundial MMXI is upbeat, fresh and fun, securing the votes of those
needing a good dance, On the Rails is
an altogether more emotional track that may well have been attracting the
voters through its being so relatable. A song that connects to people’s
feelings is one that will have many fans. This leaves me to conclude that the
winner of the competition is anyone’s guess at the moment, and in the spirit of
unbiased competition, I am not disclosing my own choice!
Sundial MMXI and On the Rails are out now.
