Is there a subject more indelible to the genre of indie
than that of matters of the heart? Offering up their ode to heartbreak, Los
Campesinos! return with the eponymous track off their upcoming album, Hello
Sadness. Despite the song’s rather sombre subject matter, the seven-piece have
hung on to their ever-so slightly twee edge with the use of glockenspiel
melodies marking Hello Sadness’ opening and close, contrasted with a driving
bassline adding a sense of energy to this lovers’ lament.
From a lyrical standpoint,
Gareth Campesinos! has once again delivered a stellar depiction of the modern
paramour. The song’s repeated reference to body parts - from “a wishbone hangs
between your breasts” to “I wear a ring of your lipstick around the knuckle of
my fourth digit” serve as an intimate and poignant audible dissection of
Gareth’s lover.
Strings weave in and out of this indie anthem punctuated
with “oohs” and “ahs” along with the track’s sparse yet effective use of
samples. If this offering’s anything to go by, you’d best get your pre-orders
in now…
Hello Sadness is out on 14th November 2011
