The Candle Thieves - The Sunshine EP

You might never have heard of The Candle Thieves before, but all that is about to change. The duo, Scott McEwan and Glockenshiels, are young Englishmen from Peterborough, a place not usually known for its creative outbursts, who utilise instruments ranging from acoustic guitars to toy grand pianos to melodicas to create their own unique brand of ramshackle electro-acoustic pop on this, their debut affair, The Sunshine EP.

The Sunshine Song is, without a doubt, a summer hit just waiting to strike. Piano and acoustic guitars are blended expertly in this sugary Casio-pop future-hit. McEwan and Glock, here, have outdone themselves in creating a song which lingers in the mind long after listening.

My Love Will Clap Its Hands For You is, again, a track that would feel right at home in the charts; an indie ballad classic, full to the brim of delicious harmonies which builds from quiet beginnings to a powerful climax. Throughout, a range of sweeping synth lines keeps the song moving along.

Next up is The State That I’m In, undoubtedly the most downbeat track on the EP, however it is a welcome addition and shows that although they specialise in sugary pop gems, they have the versatility and talent needed to stray from that proven formula and push the boundaries of their imagination.

Closer Lonely Lonely Lonely, is again a soft and gentle ballad, with glockenspiel and keyboard accompanying Glock’s heartfelt vocals. Emotional and full of delicate melodies, this is the perfect way to end the EP.

Sure to be frequently played on the radio, The Sunshine Song is truly the stand-out song from this EP; perfectly catchy and excellently executed, there is no question as to why they named the disc after this track. However none of the songs here will disappoint, and if this is the quality of their debut outing, we can only wait in anticipation for their next release.

The Candle Thieves are currently on tour, so check out their MySpace for dates to catch them out and about where you are.
