Rockness 09: Saturday

Bear Hands, Fat Sam’s
Bear Hands kicked off Saturday’s line-up in the Fat Sam’s tent with catchy tunes. Although the crowd was small, they seemed to enjoy what they saw, the band even jokingly thanking the security for keeping the small audience in order.

Tommy Sparks, Main Stage
As Tommy Sparks took to the main stage he informed the audience that he was drunk. Dressed in an Elmo suit, and stumbling about the stage, it was obvious that he was, in fact, very drunk. He however managed to start singing his songs perfectly despite his state. Surprisingly his set went down very well with a strong crowd of youths at the front, dancing and singing along with Tommy.

DJ Yoda, Clash
As soon as DJ Yoda stepped onstage, punters swarmed in all doors to the Clash tent to see the expert DJ spin records like the best of them. Mixing samples, scratching and some cult classics (Tetris theme tune, anyone?) he created an electric atmosphere which the crowd loved. So many people were jammed into the tent, that I pity anyone who was on at the same time.

Detroit Social Club, Fat Sam’s
A band who were on at the same time were Newcastle 6-piece, Detroit Social Club. Debuting a new song entitled ‘Weak As The Sun’, the small crowd that had gathered enjoyed their classic rock approach. Their set ended with singer David Burn in the photography pit, and a Scottish flag being draped across the stage.

Blood Red Shoes, Fat Sam’s
Brighton’s Blood Red Shoes were next on the Fat Sam’s line up. Taking to the stage, to a half full crowd, they started off their set at full pace and never really took their feet off the gas throughout the whole set. Blood Red Shoes wasted no time in introducing the crowd to some new songs: from the second song in they played new tunes amongst old favourites, which went down well with the crowd. By half way through the set, the tent had filled up a lot more, and Blood Red Shoes undoubtedly gained more new fans. They finished on “I Wish I Was Someone Better”, much to the crowds delight.

Frightened Rabbit, Fat Sam’s
Frightened Rabbit achieved the first big crowd in the Fat Sam’s tent, and they rightly deserved that audience. As the rain fell from the heavens outside, the atmosphere in the tent was electric, as the band played what they claimed was “the best gig of the tour”. With old favourites mixed in with newer items, mass sing-a-longs were commonplace, and as the band left the stage, the crowed bayed for an encore that, unfortunately, never came.

Alabama 3, Fat Sam’s
Being a 9-piece band, Alabama 3 looked a little cramped on Fat Sam’s relatively small stage. The three singers were on top form, and with band-wide synchronised dance moves, the tent was full to the brim with joy!

Marred slightly by an abundance of bass in the mix, the band compensated by playing catchy tunes and putting on a show; Piers Marsh (aka The Mountain of Love) tilted and twisted his keyboard whilst playing, as the band played their feel-good music. Sopranos theme tune ‘Woke Up This Morning’ really got the crowd pumping early on, and the party continued on throughout the set.

Super Furry Animals, Fat Sam’s
Super Furry Animals’ crowd was obviously suffering from clashing with Orbital, with a less than full tent. However the Welsh rock band took to the stage to a great reception and, as Gruff Rhys took to the stage, he held up a banner presenting the word “WOAH!” causing the audience to cheer. It was with this welcome that the Super Furry Animals then kicked off into the set. Starting off the first half of their set with nothing but material from their new album was never going to get the same reception as the old hits, however this was still enjoyable. During the set Gruff held up various other banners with “applause” and “thank you” ,and even a picture of Nick McCarthy during his German spoken word part in ‘Inaugural Trams’.

It was not until the second half of the set that the crowd really got going. As Super Furry Animals started playing the old familiar songs the crowd really let loose, with songs such as ‘Juxtaposed With U’ and ‘Slow Life’. The band, too, seemed to kick more into life than they had been in the first half too. As they played ‘The Man Don’t Give A Fuck’ there was a mass sing-a-long and a lot of dancing. Gruff then finished off the set by holding up his “thank you” sign.
