8track: Alright the Captain

Picture the scene: you've just stepped out of the Hercules Moments DeLorean and you find yourself in the 90s. MC Hammer pants and Walkmen are all the rage. Deciding to ignore the fashion of the day, you pick up a Walkman and head home to 2012...

Over the past few months, we've been getting in touch with bands, celebrities and more to ask them to create eight-song-long mixtapes for YOU. So crack out your Walkman and enjoy...

Alright the Captain are a trio of experimental math-rockers hailing from Derby. Their brilliantly noisy music has earned them a good reputation and a growing number of fans, especially since their second album has been well received, with praise from the likes of Rocksound among others. They have kindly chosen 8 of their favourite tracks for us - let's see what they picked!

Russian Circles - Carpe

With its lovely twinkly opening this song just breathes for ages before kicking into some wonderful heavy riffs and amazing drums. RC were a band it took me a while to get into as I'd ignored them for so long, but this song is quite easily one of my favourite songs now with gorgeous riffs throughout, right up until the build up around 6:55 before fading out.

Giraffes? Giraffes! - When The Catholic Girls Go Camping, The Nicotine Vampires Rule Supreme
This song is just a whole load of fun-filled crazy riffs, time signatures and complicated rhythms. The breakdown at 1:45 is stupidly simple but amazing before heading into an excessively fun guitar solo. This 2 piece get a HUGE sound and really sparked my love for more interesting music.

Pantera - 5 minutes alone
Get drunk and turn it up LOUD!
[LISTEN]

Death Grips - The Fever (Aye Aye)
Zach Hill's weird hip hop project - what's not to like about this?
[LISTEN]

Grimes - Genesis
Todd chose this one has he has mad love for 80's sounding synths and weird videos. I have to admit, I started off hating this song so much but it really is a grower.

Piglet - Bugstomp

8 seconds into this song and you should understand why it is so good. Mental guitar riffs mixed with some awesome grooves: these guys find a nice balance between math and pop which works perfectly.

Hanson - Mmmbop
Pop classic, you know you like it too. Don't pretend you don't.
[LISTEN]

Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song
Ahhhhhaaaahahahaaahhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaa - Driving riff throughtout. You can't really fault Zeppelin :)
