ElevenEleven Live - The Tunnels, Aberdeen, 22/03/12

After having recently taken some time off due to illness, tonight marked something of a local comeback for ElevenEleven, stepping out strong with the aim of making 2012 their biggest year yet. They certainly already have a list of future gigs and happenings to keep us interested.
Tonight, though, they come later on, as we have a somewhat eclectic selection of local talent to discuss first, starting out with Rise With Honour. Unfortunately the band were stuck with a fairly early timeslot given the multitude of bands this evening, and consequently the venue was only slowly filling up as they hit the stage. Having said that, they still got a crowd down the front and gave it their all in showing off their talents with a set of tight and heavy metal.
Next up came local lunatics TheWETFLEX, bouncing back after having to cancel a planned show last weekend. They made up for lost time by fitting in as many syllables, rhythm changes and songs into their set as humanly possible, all seemingly done at the same time with a wall of discord that somehow works well together. It makes for a very entertaining show.
Following on from the bizarre experience that is a WETFLEX set came former local boys Forest Fires, visiting Aberdeen after shifting down south to Edinburgh to show us all how they have been getting on. Playing an unstoppable set full of high energy rock, their performance included some impressive guitar work and even a couple of violin-assisted tracks to add some variation.
At this point, I would typically expect to introduce another live band of a generally similar genre to amp up the crowd before the headliners. This evening, however, instead of getting another rock/post-hardcore band, we had a set by local dupstep DJ Fonik, introduced by a mysterious computer voice and this evening assisted by a live drummer alongside the synths and samples. Certainly a change of pace, but with the volume cranked up he certainly got the crowd moving. Extra credit is deserved for an appearance – in sample form – of the Russian folk song Korobeiniki, or as it is more commonly known, the theme from Tetris.
Finally, the time came for headliners ElevenEleven to hit the stage, heralding something of a local comeback and introducing new drummer Ross, a familiar face to those paying attention to the man behind the kit when TheWETFLEX played earlier. Following on from Fonik, it was only right to keep the volume levels high as ElevenEleven launched into a set mixing older and newer songs, and for the first time this evening taking the time to slow things down with some more relaxed songs. This let us recover from the full-on nature of earlier acts before we were launched straight back in.

Without stopping playing, bassist Stuart was fed shots of Jaeger by the crowd as they band tore through a set of tightly-played and great sounding tracks, before taking to the floor for the finale. With all the band – barring the drums – stretching their leads to maximum, the band played amongst the crowd for a memorable ending to a great night of music.
