Rock band Broken Hands were an obvious choice to support
Band of Skulls: full-on and guitar-heavy, their sound isn’t original but it is
entertaining. Packed with solid tunes, their set was great fun and served as a
perfect welcome for the fans ready to rock. Having recently signed to Edwyn
Collins’ new label, keep an eye out for these lads as I suspect there are big
things to come.
When Band of Skulls took to the stage, the crowd
rightfully went wild. Not every band is capable of packing out the Lemon Tree,
after all. Launching straight into Sweet
Sour, the title track from their fantastic second album, the trio started
as they meant to continue; thunderous drums accompanied the electrifying
guitars as they raced through a punchy, exciting set. Throughout their time on
stage, the band drew extensively from their new record, but also played enough
older tunes from Baby Darling Doll Face
Honey to keep the crowd happy. The biggest cheers were, perhaps, saved for
the likes of Light of the Morning and
Death by Diamonds and Pearls. However,
no song was badly received and the new material worked well alongside the old.
At the end of the night, Band of Skulls left the stage triumphant: their fans
were happy, and their job was done.
