8track: Fearless Vampire Killers

Let us take you on a magical trip back to the 90s. MC Hammer pants were all the rage and Walkmen were the height of new technology. Keeping this in mind, over the past few months we've been getting in touch with bands around the country and asking them to create a metaphorical mixtape containing, you guessed it, eight tracks!

Laurence from Fearless Vampire Killers, a self-proclaimed ‘death pop’ band hailing from London, shares with us 8 songs that have inspired him and the rest of the band to make the music that they make. Here we go.
Title: Victoria
Artist: The Kinks
Reason: Hilariously patriotic, awesomely self-critical and an amazing melody. The Fall covered it, and that is one hell of a compliment.

Title: Jesus of Suburbia
Artist: Green Day
Reason: 8 minutes plus of sheer punk-rock genius, guaranteed to cheer anyone up and make anyone feel so much more important than other people think they are. The message here being shouted from bungalow rooftops words: “You are not alone!”

Title: The Seduction
Artist: He Is Legend
Reason: Noise and screaming. What more do you need? Melody. Okay. Well, luckily The Seduction has it all. With lyrics of forbidden love nestled amongst the shrieking chaos and a growling outro of “Juliet! You know you want it!”, who can argue?

Title: I Want To Hold Your Hand
Artist: The Beatles
Reason: After the horror of JFK being shot, only one thing could bring America out of the darkness… Enter a song of such pop majesty that listening to it makes me want to cry. The Beatles are number one, and there should be a law that everyone listens to a song a day.

Title: It’s Not a Fashion Statement; It’s a Fucking Death Wish
Artist: My Chemical Romance
Reason: This song is a must for anyone who has been messed up by an ex-partner. “For what you did to me and what I’ll do to you!” - the opening line says it all, and what follows is a melodic mash of power and hate, ending intensely and gradually building, becoming more and more optimistic: “I’ve lost my fear of falling, I will be with you.” I could write about this song all day. Incredible.

Title: Oh! You Pretty Things
Artist: David Bowie
Reason: David Bowie: one of the most diverse and intriguing musical geniuses to ever live. This song, one from the first side of Hunky Dory, is built on a solid base of fantastic melody, and lyrically it immediately paints a vivid picture. It appears to be simple but seems to have undertones of something more sinister and poignant. An inspirational artist.

Title: If You Go Away
Artist: Scott Walker
Reason: This cover of Jacque Brel’s Ne Me Quitte Pas is slightly less of a plea, but just as heart-wrenching. The strings and vocal in the final verse are destroying and Scott’s voice seeps despair. GENIUS!

Title: Fearless Vampire Killers
Artist: Fearless Vampire Killers
Reason: Our debut song, which is inspired by the film and then went on to become the band name. Fearless Vampire Killers has been praised for its lurid lyrics which speak of lust and conquest. The song is driven and in your face. An inspired debut that will hopefully give a good impression of our intent.
