The Little Kicks - Call of Youth

Publicly, the last few months have been pretty quiet for Aberdeen indie band The Little Kicks. Behind the scenes, it was a time of writing the ‘difficult’ second album amidst line-up changes and the release of frontman Steven Milne’s brilliant solo debut. All the while, though, rumours cropped up around the city that something special was just around the corner…

Fast forward to May 2011 and The Little Kicks are back with Call of Youth, their first release since 2009 debut album Boxing Clever. At over five minutes, it’s a meaty slab of summery pop and the band’s songwriting charm shines brightly throughout. It’s undoubtedly a feel-good summery track, and Milne’s vocals soar majestically – as always – over the band’s trademark guitar-pop sound.

Listening to Call of Youth, it’s evident that The Little Kicks put in a lot of work during their ‘time off’ last year. Taking the best bits from Boxing Clever and fine-tuning their songwriting, the band’s sound has evolved and grown into something even more exciting than it already was. This truly is a track which sounds fuller and more accomplished than any of their previous releases.

The Little Kicks promise much more to come over the next few months. In the meantime, download the single (it’s free!) and keep your eyes peeled: that special something has arrived.

Call of Youth is available to download for free from The Little Kicks’ Bandcamp and SoundCloud profiles, and is streaming below.
