Gerry Jablonski, The Lorelei & Brothers Reid Live - Lemon Tree 10/12/10

I think it is pretty fair to say this article is so far the most oft-delayed piece of writing to grace the fine pages of Hercules Moments, mainly thanks to a talent in procrastination and complete forgetfulness on my part. Yet here I am, nothing if not stubborn, holding up my offer of a live review of a selection of bands I consider to be some of the finest Aberdeen has to offer: Brothers Reid, The Lorelei and Gerry Jablonski and the Electric Band. On their own, these three bands are near-guaranteed to put on a fantastic show, but all lined up together by the fantastic Fat Hippy Records this was a show that could not fail to put a grin on your face and get you moving.

To save repeating myself, I think it is fair to say every band took to the stage with energy and enthusiasm to spare, each band showing us their own take on feel-good rock n roll and showing off a collection of influences from both sides of the pond. On first were Brothers Reid with a sound that takes you straight to the American Midwest. Taking cues from bluegrass and folk, they mix in a healthy amount of rock at a suitable tempo, requiring you to be up and enjoying yourself - no sitting at the back here! The Lorelei kept the influences much closer to home, with strong references to Celtic and traditional Scottish music. Throughout their set, they ramped up the tempo to an often blistering pace. To finish off the night, Gerry Jablonski took to the stage with his Electric Band to play a bluesy rock set which lasted long into the night, showcasing his and his band’s talents.

What I hope will redeem my tardiness in reviewing a gig from five distant months ago is that rather than the usual reviewers’ etiquette of enthusiastically telling you how great the gig you just missed was, I can also give you a second chance to see it! Once again, The Lemon Tree will play host to the line-up of Brothers Reid, The Lorelei and Gerry Jablonski and the Electric Band on Saturday 14th May. And if you’re lucky, you may even get the chance to catch the bands performing earlier in the day in One Up Records.

See photos from the gig here.
