The Charlatans - Who We Touch

Having seen The Charlatans live twice– first supporting the Rolling Stones, and again at last year’s Wizard Festival – I had a fair idea of what to expect from their eleventh studio outing, Who We Touch. As with every album ever written there are some cracking songs, and inevitably some weaker ones, however The Charlatans are masters of indie-rock, and Who We Touch boasts some truly memorable moments.

Album opener and lead single, Love Is Ending, is brash and exciting, commanding the listener’s attention, while My Foolish Pride oozes classic Charlatans charm, with a chorus that will linger in your head for days and an interesting string accompaniment (played pizzicato, for all you music buffs out there).

Similarly impressive is Trust in Desire, which may just be the album’s stand-out track. Again, it doesn’t drift far from The Charlatans’ proven formula, but is insanely catchy, with a hint of Brooklyn rockers Black Gold. Finally, penultimate track Oh is a whirling, psychedelic track full of luxurious organ melodies and a swirling, waltzing rhythm.

Whilst never straying very far from their comfort zone, The Charlatans have indeed crafted a very listenable, inoffensive indie-rock record. That’s not to say this album isn’t enjoyable, though; far from it, in fact, as there are some fantastic songs on here. For dedicated fans, and Charlatans virgins alike, this album is a worthy addition to any music collection.

Who We Touch is out on the 6th of September via Cooking Vinyl.
