Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: OST

Scott Pilgrim, played by Michael Cera, is the bassist in fictional band Sex Bob-Omb. Fittingly, then, the soundtrack album to Universal’s latest venture, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, begins with a cry of “WE ARE SEX BOB-OMB!” before descending into a riotous indie-grunge racket. Masterminded by rock legend Beck, Sex Bob-Omb’s songs appear throughout the album, and are reminiscent in sound of Neutral Milk Hotel’s fuzzier, noisier moments. Of the four songs featured on the soundtrack, Summertime presents itself as the standout offering.

Similarly, Sex Bob-Omb’s fictional adversaries, Crash & the Boys, appear courtesy of Broken Social Scene’s Brendan Canning and Kevin Drew. Crash & the Boys have a very punky, and much heavier sound than their rivals Sex Bob-Omb, and their high-octane noise-rock fits nicely into the album.

Throughout the album, both Beck and Broken Social Scene also make appearances under their own names; their respective sounds being a pleasant contrast to their in-film alter-egos.

Also featured on the album are Plumtree, with the unimaginably catchy Scott Pilgrim. The track was not written for the film (Plumtree actually split in 2000) but rather served as inspiration for comic book creator Brian Lee O’Malley. After listening, I challenge you to get the line “I’ve liked you for a thousand years, a thousand years” out of your head!

Elsewhere on the album, Blood Red Shoes and Metric put on stellar performances: both provide exiting powerful tracks which thunder along, adding an extra dimension to the soundtrack. Add to the mix classic tracks from the likes of The Rolling Stones and T.Rex, and you can’t go wrong!

If the music on this soundtrack album is anything to go by, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is going to be EPIC. But don’t just take my word for it, have a listen to this…

OK, so it’s not from this album. It’s called Chau Down, and it’s actually from the other soundtrack album: the film score, written by Nigel Godrich. And you know what? You can even download it – for free – here!
