Boy Genius - Dragonkick EP

It’s not often that bands release genuinely great music to the general public for free. Although it’s been available for just under a year, Boy Genius’ Dragonkick EP has just been brought to our attention, and I just had to review it! Full of catchy hooks and lovely melodies, with indie sentimentalities to boot, it really is worth your while.

Kicking off with Dragonkick, the guitars hit you thick and fast, with throbbing drums and solid bass accompanying the indie-by-numbers vocals. There’s something reminiscent of Weezer in Boy Genius’ music which, without emulating them, gives this song a familiar and welcoming feel.

Next on the agenda is Man Made, which starts fairly quietly, but builds quickly into a powerful rock ballad, with a catchy chorus and a chunky bass line. Ending on a stream of feedback, it leads to Shark, a commanding pop-rock track, again reminiscent of Weezer with just a hint of The Offspring in frontman Kyle Webster’s vocals. Boy Genius have taken influence from some great bands, and combined their greatest moments to create something not quite original, but totally their own.

Finally, the EP closes with the acoustic strum-along Powerhouse on the Prairie, a beautifully melodic, emotional ballad full of acoustic guitar and layered harmonies, which provides a perfect ending to the otherwise fast-paced EP.

With the Dragonkick EP, this Preston-based three piece have created something entirely listenable, and above all, enjoyable. If this is the standard of the music they give away for free, I look forward to their full length release, whenever that may appear. Keep an eye out for these guys in the future…
