Picture the scene: you've just stepped out of the Hercules Moments DeLorean and you find yourself in the 90s. MC Hammer pants and Walkmen are all the rage. Deciding to ignore the fashion of the day, you pick up a Walkman and head home to 2012...
Over the past few months, we've been getting in touch with bands, celebrities and more to ask them to create eight-song-long mixtapes for YOU. So crack out your Walkman and enjoy...
Scott Anderson (also known as HomeAlone) promotes Aberdeen music through
video content on his website. He frequently DJs, and this weekend he is making his national
radio debut on Kiss FM with a 60 minute mix recorded especially for the
occasion, which airs at midnight on Sunday the 22nd September.
Scott: I found it way too
difficult to pick my favourite 8 tracks ever, so instead here are my favourite
tracks of 2013 so far!
Franz Ferdinand – The Evil Eye (Todd Terje remix)
Currently loving the
new Franz Ferdinand album – The Evil Eye being a standout on it. The Todd Terje extended mix is ace and it is
definitely a great start to any mixtape!
Mayer Hawthorne – Backseat Lover
This song is just
awesome! I remember seeing Mayer Hawthorne at T in the Park back in 2010, there
were only around ten people in the tent but this didn’t dampen his spirits at
all. Mayer, and his band, The County, put
on a fantastic show and it became one of my favourite festival
appearances. He’s pretty underrated in
the UK but his latest album Where Does This Door Go definitely deserves a
listen!
Kanye West – Bound 2
Bound 2 is a return
to the classic sound of Mr Kanye West. Unlike the rest of Yeezus, this track contains all the old elements
which made me a fan of the rapper in the first place! =]More of this from Mr West would be greatly
welcomed.
Justin Timberlake – Strawberry Bubblegum
Justin Timberlake’s
album The 20/20 Experience Part 1 is my favourite album of the year – there,
I said it. The album hit me on first
listen – 10 songs with only one under the 5-minute mark. I had a big weekend over summer down at the
Yahoo Wireless Festival in London having won Kiss FM’s warm DJ competition, JT
made an appearance in some form on all three nights and his solo show was a
force to be reckoned with. Many people
may think he’s cheesy but I think he’s one of, if not the most talented pop singer of our generation. Strawberry
Bubblegum is proof of that.
Drake – The Motion (feat. Sampha)
Drake is another artist who seems to get a lot of hate for not fitting
into his genre completely. Okay, he is
more of a singer than a rapper and is very emotional at times BUT his new
record is ace. Nothing Was The Same is
released Monday 23rd September and contains some great songs (see
Wu-Tang Forever, Pound Cake and From Time featuring the fantastic Jhene
Aiko). This track (which is a bonus on
the album alongside the also fantastic All Me) pairs up Drizzy with
frequent-SBTRKT guest star Sampha. A
great match.
Earl Sweatshirt – Molasses (feat. RZA)
Earl’s Doris is
another choice record from 2013 and this cut is definitely a standout. Underground raps mixed with a classic
sounding MF-Doom/Madlib style beat put together to make a great
combination. The Wu-Tang’s own RZA plays
a small but effective part in the track too!
Danny Brown – ODB
I like Danny Brown a
lot right now; this song (off his forthcoming Old album) is weird and messed
up – a massive contrast to his last track Grown Up. He’s signed to A-Trak and Nick Catchdub’s
Fools Gold label and his XXX mixtape (while on the weird and messed up side of
things) is worth checking out.
The Little Kicks – Heartbreak Part 3
The Little Kicks
deserve to be huge; they are one of the most talented and friendly groups I’ve
ever known and this album should hopefully widen their fan base outside of
their core Aberdeen audience! I’ve been lucky enough to have the new album
(released September 30th) for a while now and it was very difficult
picking just one track from it – Modern Romance and Better Things are further
favourites – but I felt this would be a suitable mixtape closer! The song isn’t out yet so I couldn’t include a
video for it, take my word for it and listen to the single Girl in the
meantime!
