Neil Slorance is an artist from Glasgow who specialises in comics, painting and illustration. He has a new book out called The Amateur Astronomer's Journal which has been nominated for three Scottish comic book awards, and his lovely drawings have been featured on the likes of Thronecast and Buzzfeed. He even designed the information boards for the penguins at St Andrews Aquarium! Let's see what he likes to listen to!
Ashley Eriksson - Jump Like a Helicopter
As I'm writing this it's Sunday and I'm a bit worse for wear from the night before. It's worth pointing out that this state has heavily influenced this playlist as I don't really want to hear any loud noises. Ashley Eriksson is perfect for this, her songs are sweet and quiet with a nice hand-made feel to them. She also wrote the end credits song for Adventure Time!
The Tallest Man On Earth - Leading Me Now
Sticking with my no loud noises policy I thought this song would be a nice chaser to Eriksson, Mr.Tall Man has a really lovely voice and I'm a big fan of that rolling plinky plonky plucky guitar style. I'm sure that's the technical term.
Iron & Wine - Innocent Bones
Some of my favourite songs make me imagine places or little scenes. This song makes me think of a cool band on a sunny island. There's a lot to be said about the percussion on the track, I really like what the bongos and güiro bring to it. There should be more güiros in songs (that's the wooden thing with notches you run a stick up and down and it goes rrrrrrkkkkt).
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - FFunny FFrends
This song's got a really catchy tune and it keeps going and going and I'm totally cool with that.
Frightened Rabbit - Housing (In)
Okay I'm kind of awake now. I really liked Frabbit's last album, it's just start to finish belting tunes! I think it's worth stating that one of the best things about the band is their lyrics which, in my opinion, a lot of bands seem to overlook. I also didn't notice how short this song was till I put it on here. In fact it's the shortest song on the album.
Bombay Bicycle Club - Lights Out, Words Gone
I really liked this band when they popped up about 4 years ago and just kind of forgot about them til I heard this. It's got a great subby catchy bass riff and a dancy beat whilst keeping the feel overall groovy. It makes me want to get up and dance like my dad.
St. Vincent - Surgeon
I'm a big fan of that synthy-stringy vibe that St.Vincent seem to nail so well, all round it's a rich and well crafted piece of pop. It's also got a sweet keyboard solo at the end that reminds me of that Ronald Jenkees youtube guy.
Peter Broderick - I Am Piano
To round off my little hangover playlist I thought I'd chose a nice quiet ambient song and this fitted perfectly. Hush hush, I'm going back to bed now.
