We Were Promised Jetpacks - Medicine

It’s been three long years since Scottish indie-rockers We Were Promised Jetpacks released their debut album These Four Walls to acclaim from fans and critics alike. So expectations are high for their upcoming sophomore release In The Pit Of The Stomach and the lead single Medicine. The album lives up to every expectation, but more on that later. Today I’m going to tell you about Medicine.

Whilst not wholly representative of the album it does act as an aural bridge between the sound of the first album and the sound of the second. It has a fast-paced urgency to it: a bouncing energy that is reminiscent of the short sharp bursts of indie-rock that dominated These Four Walls. At the same time, though, there is something new here. There’s a confidence built through years of solid touring that the band have used to add a new depth to their sound.  Adam Thompson’s vocals have never sounded better and there’s an overall sense of self-belief that permeates the whole track (and album, but again, more on that later). It’s a strong launch pad for the album proper and is definitely representative of a band taking the next step in their career and getting it very, very right.

B-side Building Buildings is a piano-led slow-burner. It’s a definite comedown from the much punchier A-side, but it showcases the emotional depths that the band are capable of and go on to explore throughout the new album. Once again, it’s Thompson’s vocals that stand out for me and make this more than just a tacked-on piece from the cutting room floor.

A perfect way to whet the appetite for the album proper, this definitely is not more of the same from We Were Promised Jetpacks. It’s much more than that, and it’s much better.

Medicine will be released digitally and on 7” through FatCat Records on 26th September.
