Introducing.. BLK JKS

People often use the phrase “like nothing I have ever heard before” when describing bands. When describing Johannesburg-based BLK JKS, however, this phrase really couldn’t be more fitting. Blending elements of urban Zulu blues, droning guitars and rhythms you can’t help but move to, BLK JKS have created their own truly unique sound. Imagine, if you can, what would happen if Battles grew up in South Africa, or if Errors were fed a staple diet of Afro-punk. With this in mind, you’re probably halfway there on your journey through BLK JKS inimitable musical stylings.

BLK JKS’ debut EP, “Mystery”, perfectly demonstrates their musical abilities, and displays the true versatility in the music that they create. Opener “Lakeside” (available for download below) is a real beast of a track. With its pulsating opening beat, right through to its eerie screams, it is sure to get your heart pumping. Then, “Lakeside” flows perfectly into “Mystery”, another song which allows BLK JKS to show off their individuality. “It’s In Every Thing You’ll See” then brings the EP to a perfect end, with an intimate solo from singer Linda. This is a stripped down, mellow song compared to the rest of the EP, but is nonetheless absolutely brilliant.

BLK JKS simply defy description. Now it’s up to you to catch them live, and really see what all the fuss is about.
